Lord, What Fools These Mortals Be

While Bird is not in the habit of quoting Shakespeare the title here seemed appropriate in light of the thousands of people flocking to the north side of Mt. St. Helens for the express purpose of watching the volcano erupt. The county sheriff and state police have been forced into providing traffic control officers to assist with the heavy volume of vehicles heading for the mountain from all over the Pacific Northwest. It's rather like people driving to the beach to watch the hurricane come ashore.

These folks may soon turn from mortal fools to crispy critters if the mountain erupts with force in any way similar to its last display in 1980. While an eruption of that magnitude is not expected the volcano remains a dangerous place. Bird spent some time this morning convincing some of the people of the danger and in the picture he watches, pleased, that a few of them have heeded his warnings. To be on the safe side Bird also spread false rumors of a "pink light" special at the Skamania County K-Mart. Store security was alerted to the coming influx of customers.
