Governor Gary Locke (center) of Washington and local residents from the Mt. St. Helens area present a plaque to Bird in a ceremony at the state capitol in Olympia. Bird was honored for his courageous work in alleviating the gas and steam pressure at the volcano on Friday. Governor Locke proclaimed Saturday, October 2, as Bird Appreciation Day in the state. State offices will be closed today in tribute and celebration. Bird declined a parade in his honor but a flamingo windsock will fly from the top of the Seattle Space Needle for a week in his honor.
