Family Album
While he's on Rest and Recuperation from the hurricanes Bird has been leafing through his family photo albums and thought he would share a few memories and some history over the next week or so.
Today the RBR is proud to offer the true story of why the Red Sea was parted allowing the Israelites to escape Egypt. Along with the other plagues and and pestilences set upon the Egyptians was one that killed the rock shrimp that lived in the Nile and the marshes surrounding it. That left a severe food shortage for Bird's pink relatives of that time. They migrated to the Red Sea coast only to discover that the shrimp in that body of water were actually living a little too deep for even the long, dark legs of a flamingo to reach.
A quick prayer to Flam, the Egyptian marsh god, and Leah, one of the auxillary bird deities, was sent to solve the problem. She was met with many warm greetings. Just as the seas parted on her command and the pink horde was able to start eating, a teeming throng of Israelites looking for all the world like the historic version of bargain shoppers descending on Walmart on the day after Christmas appeared on the scene, led by some faux Egyptian prince named Moses.
When the reporters from the Cairo Times arrived this prince led all the Israelites onto the sea bed and they rushed through the openings to Sinai where the K-Mart was located, and where there was a huge sale on stone tablets. The sea, of course closed up on the pursuing Egyptians, but not before the flamingos were able to eat their fill and move on.
The press, of course, got the story wrong and credited Moses with the heroic event. One artist of the time was able to capture the true scene and it is presented at the left as proof positive of the story. It shows Leah saving the day.
Flamingos still celebrate this meal and their warm greeting of Leah when she came to save them.
American flamingos even established a shrine to the greeting in Florida and that is how "Hi-ya-Leah" got its name. As Paul Harvey would say....."and now you know the rest of the story."
