A Boy, His Dog, and His Flamingos

The World Art Tour continues today with Hound and Hunter by the American painter Winslow Homer, done in 1892. Here's L'iL P-Brirds notes on the painting.

In dis paintin', some boy gots plum shot and wasted some dea' and gots'ta figure out how t'get it asho'e befo'e it sinks, widout swampin' his boat. Man! His dog be nearby, but dere seems t'be no way fo' it t'help brin' in such some large animal. A Doo-wop (o' Greek) cho'us uh flamin'os also dropped by t'help. Jes hang loose, brud. Flamin'os is not da damn best uh helpuh's when tryin' t'haul some dea' to sho'e, but dey provided beatal interludes by rappin' De Pina Colada beat while da damn boy struggled t'get da damn dea' to sho'e.

Homer hits 'esactly de right notes here, dig dis: de scene be full uh drama, but dere's no "sto'y", no mo'al, no romanticizin' uh eida' de hunta' o' de deer. Ah be baaad... Just some keenly observed moment, brilliantly captured by some plainrapped artist. Man!
