Record Price

There was a record price at the Sotheby's Auction in New York last evening, and it was for a very important painting (picture at the left). $32.1 million was paid for Maternite II by Paul Gaugin, painted during his Tahitian period.

Bird is extremely pleased about the sale since the painting is one of the three Gaugin did in Tahiti using one of Bird's distant relatives, Claude.

The bidding was spirited and the winning bidder was an anonymous person phoning in the bid. Officials from Sotheby's declined to identify the winning bidder.

One should notice the balance in the painting as the fat, pink cloud picks up the luster in the Claude's neck and back, and the darker section between the two standing women is reflected in Claude's chest and leg areas.
