What do you buy someone who is worth an estimated 34 million pounds for his 40th birthday? Lord Alli, the founder with Bob Geldof of Planet 24 Television, was given his own dog race by his close friends Baroness McDonagh, the former general secretary of the Labour Party, her sister the Labour MP Siobhain McDonagh and friends from Mitcham and Morden Labour Party.

They took him to the dogs at Wimbledon, which included on the race card, the Lord Alli Stakes. "It was my first time and I loved it," said Alli. "I had a flutter and had beginner's luck."
