They're Back!...Briefly
A reappearance by the plastic pink flamingos at Cranston RI City Hall.
Two of the plastic birds clad in Santa caps were placed on the lawn outside City Hall over the weekend. They were promptly removed by officials reports The Providence Journal.
The flamingos originally appeared last year after the city invited the public to place items on the lawn as part of the holiday display. The city's invitation quickly became a court battle between the American Civil Liberties Union and the mayor. The civil liberties group said the display violated the Constitution. The mayor said the mixed menagerie wasn't discriminating. A judge ruled the display didn't violate the Constitution but DID subvert free speech.
This year the mayor put up a display with both religious and secular symbols. Residents were NOT invited to place their own ornaments.
