Directionally Challenged?

...or Birdknapped?

As if out of a novel by Fithian Rankin bird watchers are descending on the Beloit WI area . They are trampling through gardens and fields looking for a green breasted mango. Primarily they are trampling through the back yard of Joan Salzberg.

Obviously, we're not talking about an unripe fruit here - but a hummingbird normally found in Central America and southern Mexico. Ms. Salzberg noticed the bird about a month ago at a feeder in her yard and in a nearby basswood tree.

According to general bird experts (as opposed to specific bird experts) the GBM is almost never seen even in northern Mexico, but here we have one in southern Wisconsin. The RBR contacted our local expert on birds - Bird. "Global warming," he replied. He also suggested the RBR check the statistics for the Hispanic population percentage in the greater Beloit area saying, "He might just feel at home there."

The RBR is indebted to Karen A. for informing us of this highly unusual sighting.
