This MUST Stop

It was bad enough when the pelicans began disapperaing, and it got a little worse when the ducks quit breeding, but now 10,000 flamingos are 'el morto' in Tanzania.

Two species of flamingos inhabit Lake Manyara - the lesser flamingo, which eats algae, and the greater flamingo, which mainly eats insects. According to James Lembeli of the Tanzania National Park it is the lesser flamingos that have been dying over the last month. The blue-green algae is the suspected culprit.

Flamingos are an important tourist attraction in Tanzania, second only to lions in popularity.

For what it's worth, there is also a serious outbreak of venereal disease among baboons in Tanzania. The disease targets the reproductive organs of the primate. "The consequences for male baboons are particularly gruesome," says Elibariki Mtui, of the African Wildlife Foundation in Arusha, Tanzania. "The genitals kind of rot away, then they just drop off...." Tanzania is hereby placed on the official RBR "Don't Go There Unless You Have To" list, though the thought of recommending Tanzania as a vacation site for certain members of the legal profession has occurred to us.
