We Have a Winner

There was a very funny movie out a number of years ago called The Wrong Box. It was about a tontin, a pact where a group of folks each put "x" amount of money into a pool and the last one living gets the money.

About five years ago four people, including me, formed our own corrupted version of a tontin. Realistcally it was more like a death pool. We were discussing famous folk who were getting on in years so over a few beers we each put in $20 and chose a name from among the group we were discussing. Since it wasn't fresh in my mind I never gave much thought to this over the last several years -- until last night when the keeper of the funds telephoned.

Today at lunch I will collect $80 because Ronald Reagan went to the great B movie in the sky. Bob Hope and George Burns (the person selecting George was really inebriated that night) had already preceeded him into the Hollywood Hills so the last man standing was "my guy." I was fortunate enough to pick Pope John Paul II. Of course "last man standing" is sort of an oxymoron with the Pope, but hey, $80 is $80.

Time for a little communion, I think.
