Bird at the world cup
Bird is in Germany for the next few weeks taking in the spectacle that is the world Cup. His first report with photos follows.

One thing that is difficult to understand about soccer or "futbol" is why the players think they can fly. It's difficult enough to migrate through the crowd on the field while controlling to ball without having to think about flying.
While not claiming to be an expert on the game it seems that these players here (from the top down from Ivory Coast, Holland and Sweden) would have much more success if they kept their feet on the ground. The Dutch player at least has an excuse as his attempt at flight came after scoring a goal. He is the one player who shows some promise for flying. His take off form is excellent, as any flamingo can tell you, but he needs a little more reach in his step. Perhaps another goal or two will help him.
